Dr. Hugh Returns Home To Teach Class Dr. Hugh T. Lefler, a native of Cooieemee and a graduate of Coeleeroee High School, taught a class on North Carolina history to the teachers of the county at the Davie County Education Cen ter here yesterday. He is the man most people think of when the subject of North Carolina history is brought up because he has written more about it than any other living person. Yet Dr. Lefler says that the history of North Carolina is only his secondary interest, that he is first of all a student of Colonial America. His contributions to that field - have been extensive. Jim Wall, a teacher at Davie High and former studedtof Dr. Lefler, pointed out that to sit in his classroom was always very fascinating, interesting and at times, a little humotoos He could always capture the attention of his students and create an interest that was unbelievable. After meeting Dr. Lefler and talking with him, this was very easy to understand. A more fascinating and remarkable man, I've yet the privilege of meeting. Mr. Wall also plans to publish a book on the complete history of Davie County this year. Dr. Lefler is not overly interested in historical theories, but has a passion for truth. Unless a fact can be proven conclusively, it does not go into his books. For instance, he carefully points out that Virginia Dare was not the first white child bom in what is now the United States. "She was merely the first English child, for the Spanish were in Florida years before." While in college, Dr. Lefler won monograms in basketball, track, baseball and tennis. Now when he's not writing history, which he does for several hours before breakfast each morning, he plays golf and tends his vegetable garden. Dr. Lefler, who has been with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1935, is married and the father of two sons. Gasses at the Davie County Education Center will continue this week for the Davie County teachers. Other well known teaches will include, Manly Wade Wellman of Chapel Hill, who has written millions of words in his lifetime, and just about every one of them to do with North Carolina. Sharpe is also the publisher editor of STATE magazine and, under various pen names, writes most of Ae articles himself. Or. Laftor chats with Jim Wall, one of his former and favorite students, at the Davie County Education Center. Poor Prospect... "But I don't understand why you won't marry me, Hazel," wailed the young man. "There isn't anybody else, is there?" Hazel looked at his homely face, the ears that were too long and the mouth that was too big. "Oh, Henry," she cried, "There must be."
